Visit Volterra and its surroundings on board a Maserati MC20 Hybrid

14 April 2022

Visiting Volterra means taking a dip back in time and immersing yourself in an atmosphere that recalls distant eras, rich in history and enchanting places. This jewel perched on the hill of the Val di Cecina is perfect to be reached by car: we propose you visit Volterra in a day and discover its surroundings on board the super sporty Maserati MC20 hybrid to fully enjoy the suggestive climate of these lands. The small Volterra is a fortified town in the province of Pisa and still retains the signs of its Etruscan and Roman past, which make it one of the most fascinating villages in Italy. You will then have the opportunity to relive all these past eras during your visit to the city.

Visit Volterra onboard one of the finest Maserati hybrids

Once you arrive at the foot of the Etruscan walls of Volterra aboard your hybrid Maserati MC20, you can start from the oldest of the six entrance gates, or Porta dell'Arco that welcomes you in all its magnificence to take you to the heart of the historic centre. Another gateway worthy of note is Porta San Felice, for its splendid views of the countryside that overlook the city.

Meandering through the streets of the centre you can reach one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, Piazza dei Priori, which retains its original form dating back to 1200 together with the homonymous Palace, built entirely in stone and symbol of the city, being the oldest town hall in all of Tuscany. Do not miss the opportunity to climb the square's tower to enjoy the spectacular view over the entire Val di Cecina. Within Piazza dei Priori there are also the Duomo and the Baptistery, decorated with white and green marbles and absolutely unmissable if you decide to visit Volterra. Also here, the traces of the Etruscan past of the city are evident and are manifested in crucial finds such as the famous holy water basin made from the marble tomb. The history of Volterra, a city with a thousand years of history, is to be discovered among its Roman Theatre, thermal baths, Medici Fortress and Rivers Park with its green area and the testimonies of buildings from various eras, including the remains of the Etruscan acropolis, inhabited since the Bronze Age. Palazzo Viti-Incontri is instead the best destination to discover how the nobles lived until 1800, among the sumptuous rooms full of works of art, oriental artefacts, rare books and ornaments of Italian art from the most varied eras.

If you want to visit Volterra in one day onboard your Maserati rental, your itinerary can not miss a few cultural stops, starting from the Etruscan Museum Guarnacci, which illustrates the golden age of this civilization and preserves one of the most significant archaeological finds in the world, called by D’Annunzio "The Shadow of the evening". From here, continuing along the arched streets of Volterra, you can also visit the Pinacoteca and the Civic Museum. Leave your hybrid Maserati MC20 in Piazza dei Martiri for a moment and let yourself be guided by the most evocative promenade of the city, to discover the extraordinary views over the entire landscape that runs to the sea. Marvel at the magnificence of the tower-houses, a typical Volterra building: these are fortified houses that belonged to the wealthiest families in the area to preserve their immense treasures.

Visit Volterra in a day: some curiosities

Volterra has been known since Etruscan times as the village of alabaster, which has been present in the various parts of the area for over seven million years, each producing different stones in terms of appearance and hardness. Did you know that Volterra alabaster is the most valuable in Europe? With your Maserati rental, you can discover it among the immense tunnels and open-air quarries of the area, reach the Alabaster Museum, and also admire the ancient art of processing that is handed down from the time of the Etruscans.

More recently, thousands of tourists and fans have decided to visit Volterra in the footsteps of vampires: the city has become famous all over the world thanks to Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga, who set part of her second book and the beloved film right within the walls of Volterra.

Visiting Volterra is particularly impressive during certain periods of the year, such as in summer when the Palio del Cero comes to life, which sees the eight city districts compete, then the medieval re-enactment of Volterra A.D. 1398, and finally the Palio dei Caci with the race along the via Franceschini. There are also many events related to the flavours of the tradition, made of local products such as mushrooms and white truffles or olive oil, but also of typical dishes such as soup from Volterra and tripe with Volterra.

  • Montecatini Val di Cecina, the medieval village that became famous for hosting the largest mines in Europe in the 1800s;
