From Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi aboard the Ferrari Portofino

01 July 2022

The fame and the unmistakable beauty of the Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast make tourists from all over the world dream every year. We recommend renting a Ferrari Portofino to fully enjoy the scenic roads of the Sorrento Peninsula that stand against the Gulf of Naples.

From Sorrento to Positano, and Amalfi: 30 kilometers of pure magic on the Ferrari Portofino

Sorrento is the ideal starting point to visit the Amalfi Coast, and we are sure that the journey will not disappoint you. You can start from the city of lemons, on your red Ferrari Portofino, and take the Panoramic State Road 163 that will lead you to your destination rewarding you after each curve, with a series of breathtaking views overlooking the sea. Take a few stops along the way to admire the view to take pictures, or to enjoy a fresh lemonade or a granita at a food truck along the way, one of the typical features of the two coasts.

The fame of Positano and Sorrento

Pearl of rare beauty, the notoriety of Sorrento has ancient origins, and resists over the centuries thanks to its cliffs that tear through the historic center to dive into the waters of the Gulf of Naples, and the lemon trees whose scent still fill up its streets. Positano and Sorrento were important destinations of the Grand Tour of the artists in 1700 and were also celebrated by masters of literature such as Goethe, Byron, Tolstoy, and Dickens, all promoters of the dreamy air that was, and still is, breathed in these magnificent lands.
Once you arrive in Sorrento in your rented Ferrari Portofino, lose yourself in the colourful streets lined with lemon trees and arrive to Piazza Tasso, the heart of Sorrento life with its luxurious hotels and ancient artisans' workshops. Here you can also taste the typical gnocchi alla sorrentina and sample the local Limoncello, exported all over the world. You may also decide to visit one of the traditional Limoncello factories.
Once in Positano along the SS163, park your Ferrari Portofino in the car park at the bottom of the downhill slope that enters the historic centre to enjoy a tour of the town and get around freely on foot. From here, follow the streets that climb the town, all developed in a vertical line, with houses clinging to the rock. Visit the exclusive boutiques, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and its dome that dominates the entire old town, the opulent architecture, beaches and sumptuous cafés. Second only to Capri for fame and magnificence, Positano is all to be discovered and admired along with its smaller, lesser-known neighbour, Praiano. After Positano and Sorrento you can in fact continue on to Praiano, for a relaxing weekend of exclusive beaches and spectacular sunsets, far from the crowds that grip the most famous destinations during the summer months.

From Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi: the ancient Maritime Republic and Ravello

Amalfi shares Positano's fame, building on its historical power as a Maritime Republic along with Venice, Pisa and Genoa. Now a UNESCO heritage site, Amalfi still bears the signs of that period between the Arsenal where boats were made and the great event of the Regatta of the Maritime Republics. Thanks to the Portofino Ferrari rental you can drive to the gates of the town and from here visit the Byzantine-inspired monuments, in particular the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, but also enjoy a Santa Rosa pastry and a typical coffee with sfusato amalfitano zest, as well as admire the beaches of Amalfi. Continue on to Ravello, a real hidden gem just a few minutes' drive from Amalfi, which stands more than three hundred metres above sea level and offers some unforgettable views of the Gulf of Salerno amidst lush gardens and sumptuous villas. Don't miss a visit to the panoramic garden of Villa Cimbrone, also known as the terrace on infinity.

Other ideas for driving from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi on the red Ferrari Portofino

Starting from Sorrento and driving along the scenic route 163 in your Ferrari Portofino, but also taking the reverse route starting from Amalfi and passing through Positano and Sorrento, you can discover the wonders of two of the world's most famous and loved coastlines. If you have been enchanted by these destinations and are looking for other lesser-known stops in the surrounding area, we recommend you stop in:

  • Arcipelago delle Sirenuse or Li Galli, the complex of islands on the border between reality and legend where, according to mythology, the three sirens of the Odyssey lived;
  • Atrani, the smallest municipality in Italy, a tiny jewel of just 0.12 square kilometres less than a kilometre from Amalfi;
  • Vietri, considered the seaside resort of Salerno;
  • Furore and Conca dei Marini, for their special natural attractions such as the Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto) and sports trails.
